|Dr. Mary Alice Webb Barfield, PhD, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Jacksonville. A memorial service will be held at Cypress Village, 4600 Middleton Park Circle, East on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
Born in Newcastle, Pennsylvania on September 6, 1920 to John T. K. Smith and Sarah Alice Gilfillan Smith, Mary Alice received her undergraduate degree in education from Jacksonville University and her Masterís Degree and Doctorate in Library Science from Florida State University. Dr. Barfield was retired from Florida Community College where she served as Director of Libraries and later Director of Staff and Programs. She was also instrumental in the creation of the schoolís International Travel-Study program.
Mary Alice was a member of the Pilot Club, the Jacksonville Womenís Cub, Salvation Army Auxiliary, St. Vincentís Medical Center Auxiliary, J.U. Friends of the Library and she was a Past-President of the Florida Library Association.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her two sisters, Margery Jane and Susan, her first husband, James Webb, Jr; her son, James Webb, III and her second husband, Commander Charles Barfield, Ret. US Navy. Survivors include her grandson, Bennett Charles Webb; nephew, Pat Stinson (Linda), great nephews and nieces, Rick, Sharon and Cynthia, and great-great nephews and nieces, Norman, Rachel, Patrick, Michael, Griffin and Nicole.
